Gastric and Acidity: Causes, Home Remedies and When to See a Doctor

Burning chest, sour taste, bloating after meals — "gastric" is probably the most common health complaint in Bangladesh. Pharmacies sell PPI capsules like sweets, yet the problem keeps returning. Here's what actually causes acidity and how to fix it properly.

What causes gastric and acidity?

  • Long gaps between meals, then overeating
  • Oily, deep-fried and overly spicy food; excess tea-coffee on an empty stomach
  • Lying down right after eating; late-night dinners
  • Smoking, stress and poor sleep
  • H. pylori infection — a treatable bacterial cause of recurring ulcers
  • Painkillers (NSAIDs) taken frequently without stomach protection

Which home remedies actually work?

  1. Eat on time, eat less per sitting. Four smaller meals beat two huge ones.
  2. Finish dinner 2–3 hours before bed, and raise the head of your bed slightly if you get night-time reflux.
  3. Cut the triggers: excessive oil-spice, smoking, betel leaf with jorda, and empty-stomach tea.
  4. Walk 10–15 minutes after meals instead of lying down.
  5. Plain water, isabgul in water, and yogurt can soothe symptoms for many people.

Is it bad to take gas medicine (PPI) every day?

Occasional antacid or a short PPI course (per a doctor's advice) is fine. But unsupervised daily use for months can cause vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium, and may hide serious diseases. If you need acid medicine for more than 2 weeks, you need a diagnosis — not more capsules. Read detailed medicine information like dosage and precautions of common gastric medicines on ChamberBD.

When must you see a doctor?

See a gastroenterologist promptly if you have any of these alarm signs:

  • Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Vomiting blood or black, tarry stools
  • Persistent vomiting, or symptoms starting after age 45–50
  • Severe pain that wakes you at night despite medicine
