What is Seclo?
Seclo 20 mg is Square Pharmaceuticals' omeprazole brand and one of the best-selling anti-ulcer medicines in Bangladesh. As a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), it strongly reduces stomach acid production by blocking the H⁺/K⁺-ATPase enzyme in the stomach lining.
It is used for acidity, heartburn, gastric and duodenal ulcers, and acid reflux disease (GERD).
Indications
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers
- Heartburn and acid dyspepsia
- NSAID-associated ulcer prevention
- Zollinger–Ellison syndrome
- Helicobacter pylori eradication (with antibiotics)
Dosage & Administration
Adults: Usually 20 mg once daily before breakfast. For severe reflux or ulcers, doctors may prescribe 40 mg daily or extend treatment to 4–8 weeks.
Swallow the capsule whole with water — do not crush or chew. Take at least 30–60 minutes before a meal for best effect.
Side Effects
Common side effects are usually mild and temporary:
- Headache
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Abdominal pain, flatulence
- Nausea
Long-term use may be associated with vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium, and a slightly increased risk of bone fracture.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution: Long-term, unsupervised use of PPIs is common in Bangladesh but not recommended. If symptoms persist beyond 14 days of self-treatment, see a doctor — persistent symptoms can mask stomach cancer or H. pylori infection. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration.
Drug Interactions
Omeprazole may interact with:
- Clopidogrel — may reduce its antiplatelet effect
- Diazepam, phenytoin, warfarin — slower elimination
- Ketoconazole, itraconazole — reduced absorption
- Methotrexate — increased levels
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to omeprazole or other PPIs. Should not be taken together with rilpivirine-containing medicines.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Omeprazole may be used in pregnancy when clearly needed (US FDA category C). Small amounts pass into breast milk; consult your doctor before use while breastfeeding.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to take Seclo 20?
Take Seclo 30–60 minutes before breakfast on an empty stomach. This is when proton pumps are most active, so the medicine works best.
Can I take Seclo every day for years?
Long-term daily use should only be under a doctor's supervision. Chronic PPI use can affect vitamin B12, magnesium and bone health, and may mask serious conditions.
What is the difference between Seclo and Maxpro?
Seclo contains omeprazole while Maxpro contains esomeprazole — a purified isomer of omeprazole. Both reduce stomach acid; esomeprazole may give slightly stronger acid control in some patients.
