A General Surgeon (general surgery specialist) diagnoses and surgically treats diseases of the abdomen and soft tissues. In Bangladesh, patients most often see a general surgeon for appendicitis, gallstones (pittothalir pathor), all types of hernia (inguinal, umbilical, incisional), piles/haemorrhoids, anal fissure and fistula, thyroid swelling (goitre), breast lumps, lipomas and skin cysts, and abscesses or wounds that need draining or surgery. They also manage diabetic foot ulcers and many acute surgical emergencies. In a typical consultation, the surgeon takes your history, examines the affected area, and reviews or orders investigations such as ultrasound, blood tests, or endoscopy. If surgery is needed, they explain the procedure, whether it can be done by laparoscopy ("keyhole" surgery) or open operation, the risks, recovery time, and approximate cost. You should see a general surgeon for any persistent abdominal pain, a lump or swelling, bleeding from the back passage, a non-healing wound, or when a GP or medicine specialist refers you for a possible operation.
