An ENT specialist (also called an otolaryngologist, or in Bangla a নাক কান গলা বিশেষজ্ঞ) treats problems of the ear, nose, throat, sinuses, voice box and the related areas of the head and neck. In Bangladesh, patients commonly see an ENT doctor for a blocked or runny nose and sinusitis, recurring nasal allergy (allergic rhinitis), ear pain and ear infections, reduced hearing or ringing in the ears, persistent sore throat and enlarged tonsils, hoarseness of voice, snoring with sleep apnoea, vertigo and dizziness, and to remove ear wax or foreign objects. They manage both children and adults, and treat conditions either with medicines or, when needed, with minor procedures and surgery. A typical consultation involves a careful history, examination of the ear with an otoscope and the nose and throat, sometimes a hearing test (audiometry), nasal endoscopy or imaging, followed by a clear treatment plan. You should see an ENT specialist when symptoms last more than a week or two, keep coming back, affect your hearing or breathing, or do not improve with simple home care.
