What is Potassium Bicarbonate + Sodium Alginate?
Potassium Bicarbonate + Sodium Alginate is a alginate reflux suppressant with antacid medicine available in Bangladesh under many brand names. Below are its uses, dosage, side effects and precautions — and all brands with their current prices.
What is Potassium Bicarbonate + Sodium Alginate used for?
- Symptomatic relief of heartburn and acid reflux.
- Acid regurgitation and indigestion associated with gastro-oesophageal reflux.
- Relief of reflux symptoms after meals or during pregnancy when considered appropriate by a healthcare professional.
Dosage & Administration
Adults generally take Potassium Bicarbonate + Sodium Alginate after meals and at bedtime, following the product label or the prescriber’s instructions. Tablets are usually chewed thoroughly before swallowing; suspension should be shaken well and measured accurately. The exact dose and duration depend on the product strength, symptoms and the patient’s medical condition, so follow the doctor’s or pharmacist’s advice.
Side Effects
- Common or mild effects may include bloating, belching, nausea, abdominal discomfort or constipation/diarrhoea.
- Unpleasant taste or chalky feeling may occur with some preparations.
- Allergic reactions are uncommon but may include rash, itching, swelling, dizziness or breathing difficulty; seek urgent medical help if these occur.
- Excess use may contribute to high sodium or high potassium levels, especially in people with kidney disease or those taking medicines that affect potassium.
Precautions & Warnings
Use with caution in people with kidney disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, fluid retention, liver disease requiring salt restriction, or a history of high potassium levels. Ask for advice before use if symptoms are severe, persistent, recurrent, associated with weight loss, vomiting blood, black stools, difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or if regular use is needed for more than a short period. Use under a registered doctor’s or pharmacist’s guidance.
Drug Interactions
- Antacid/alginate products may reduce or delay absorption of some medicines; separate other oral medicines by at least 2 hours unless a doctor or pharmacist advises otherwise.
- Important examples include tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, iron, levothyroxine, bisphosphonates and some antifungal medicines.
- Because this combination contains potassium, seek advice before using with ACE inhibitors, ARBs, potassium-sparing diuretics such as spironolactone, potassium supplements, trimethoprim or other medicines that can raise potassium.
- People on sodium-restricted diets should check the sodium content of the product and consult a healthcare professional.
Contraindications
- Known allergy or hypersensitivity to potassium bicarbonate, sodium alginate or any ingredient of the product.
- Severe kidney impairment or known high blood potassium unless specifically directed by a doctor.
- Use should be avoided where sodium or potassium intake is strictly contraindicated, unless a doctor has assessed the risk and benefit.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Alginate-based reflux medicines are commonly used for heartburn during pregnancy and breastfeeding when needed, but the most suitable product and dose should be confirmed with a doctor or pharmacist, especially if there is kidney disease, high blood pressure, swelling, pre-eclampsia risk or a salt/potassium-restricted diet.
Storage
Store at room temperature, away from excessive heat, moisture and direct sunlight. Keep the bottle or strip tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, and follow any product-specific instructions for suspension after opening.
