What is Hypromellose?

Hypromellose is a ophthalmic lubricant / artificial tear medicine available in Bangladesh under many brand names. Below are its uses, dosage, side effects and precautions — and all brands with their current prices.

What is Hypromellose used for?

  • Temporary relief of dry eye symptoms such as burning, irritation, grittiness, or discomfort.
  • Lubrication of the eye surface when tear production is insufficient or the tear film is unstable.
  • Protection and moistening of the eyes in conditions where ocular surface dryness is present, as advised by a healthcare professional.

Dosage & Administration

For adults, Hypromellose eye drops are usually applied to the affected eye(s) as needed, commonly one drop at a time. Eye gel is generally used less frequently and may be preferred when longer-lasting lubrication is needed, often at night because it can blur vision. The exact frequency and duration should follow the product label or the prescribing doctor’s instructions. If using other eye medicines, leave a gap of at least 5–15 minutes; use gels or ointments last.

Side Effects

  • Temporary blurred vision, especially after eye gel.
  • Mild stinging, burning, or irritation after application.
  • Watery eyes, redness, or sticky eyelids.
  • Rarely, allergic reactions such as swelling, rash, severe itching, or worsening redness.
  • Seek medical advice urgently if eye pain, persistent irritation, vision changes, or signs of infection occur.

Precautions & Warnings

Use carefully if you have eye pain, recent eye injury or surgery, eye infection, persistent redness, or symptoms that worsen or do not improve. Do not touch the dropper or tube tip to the eye or any surface, as contamination can cause infection. If wearing contact lenses, check whether the product is suitable; preservative-containing products may require lenses to be removed and reinserted after a waiting period. Avoid driving or operating machinery until vision is clear. Use under the guidance of a registered doctor or pharmacist.

Drug Interactions

  • No important food interactions are known because Hypromellose is used on the eye and has minimal systemic absorption.
  • Other eye drops may be diluted or washed out if used too close together; separate ophthalmic products by at least 5–15 minutes.
  • Use eye gels or ointments after eye drops, unless a doctor advises otherwise.
  • Some preservatives in eye drops can be absorbed by soft contact lenses; follow the label or pharmacist’s advice.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or allergy to Hypromellose or any ingredient in the formulation.
  • Do not use if the solution changes colour, becomes cloudy, contains particles, or the container seal is broken or contaminated.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Hypromellose eye preparations have minimal systemic absorption and are generally considered low risk during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as directed. Pregnant or breastfeeding patients should still use them according to the product label or on advice from a doctor or pharmacist, especially if frequent or long-term use is needed.

Storage

Store at room temperature, away from excessive heat, direct sunlight, and moisture. Keep the cap tightly closed and do not freeze unless the label specifically allows it. Do not share eye drops or gels with others. Discard after the expiry date and after the recommended period following opening, commonly 4 weeks for many multidose eye products unless the label states otherwise. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions about Hypromellose

What is Hypromellose used for?

Hypromellose is used as an artificial tear to help relieve dry eye symptoms such as burning, irritation, grittiness, or discomfort. Use it according to the product label or your doctor’s advice.

Can Hypromellose blur my vision?

Yes. Temporary blurred vision can occur, especially with gel formulations. Do not drive or operate machinery until your vision is clear again.

Can I use Hypromellose with other eye drops?

Usually yes, but leave at least 5–15 minutes between different eye medicines. Eye gels or ointments should generally be used last unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Can contact lens users use Hypromellose?

Check the label or ask a pharmacist or doctor. Some products with preservatives may require you to remove soft contact lenses and wait before reinserting them.
