What is Betacarotene + Vitamin C + Vitamin E?
Betacarotene + Vitamin C + Vitamin E is a antioxidant vitamin supplement medicine available in Bangladesh under many brand names. Below are its uses, dosage, side effects and precautions — and all brands with their current prices.
What is Betacarotene + Vitamin C + Vitamin E used for?
- Prevention or treatment of dietary deficiency of beta-carotene/provitamin A, vitamin C, or vitamin E when intake is inadequate.
- Supplementation during periods of increased nutritional need when recommended by a registered doctor or pharmacist.
- Antioxidant vitamin supplementation as part of nutritional support; it is not a substitute for a balanced diet or treatment of disease.
Dosage & Administration
Adult dosing depends on the exact strength and the reason for use. Follow the prescribing doctor’s instructions or the product label; these supplements are commonly taken with food to improve tolerance and absorption. Do not exceed the recommended daily dose, and ask a doctor or pharmacist if long-term use is needed.
Side Effects
- Common: nausea, stomach upset, abdominal discomfort, constipation or diarrhoea.
- Vitamin C may cause heartburn or diarrhoea at higher intakes.
- Beta-carotene may cause harmless yellow-orange discoloration of the skin, especially with high intake.
- Vitamin E may increase the tendency to bleed, particularly at high doses or with blood-thinning medicines.
- Rare but serious: allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, breathing difficulty; kidney stones in susceptible people with high vitamin C intake; unusual bruising or bleeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Use cautiously in smokers, people with past or current asbestos exposure, bleeding disorders, those taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medicines, kidney stone disease, severe kidney disease, iron overload disorders such as haemochromatosis, and before surgery. Do not use high-dose supplements for cancer, heart disease, or eye disease prevention unless specifically prescribed. Use under a registered doctor's or pharmacist's guidance.
Drug Interactions
- Warfarin, other anticoagulants, and antiplatelet medicines: vitamin E may increase bleeding risk; monitoring may be needed.
- Orlistat, cholestyramine, colestipol, and mineral oil: may reduce absorption of fat-soluble components such as beta-carotene and vitamin E.
- High-dose vitamin C can increase iron absorption and may be unsuitable in iron overload disorders.
- High-dose antioxidant supplements may interfere with some chemotherapy or radiotherapy regimens; oncology patients should use only if approved by their specialist.
- Vitamin C may interfere with some laboratory tests, including certain urine glucose or stool occult blood tests.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, or any excipient in the product.
- Use of high-dose beta-carotene in current smokers or people with significant asbestos exposure unless specifically advised by a doctor.
- Do not use as a replacement for medically indicated treatment of vitamin deficiency, eye disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, or other illnesses.
Pregnancy & Lactation
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, normal dietary intakes of these vitamins are important, but high-dose supplementation should not be used unless recommended by a healthcare professional. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should follow antenatal or postnatal supplement advice from their doctor and avoid exceeding recommended daily amounts.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date or if the capsule/tablet appears damaged or discoloured.
