What is Benzyl Benzoate?
Benzyl Benzoate is a topical scabicide and pediculicide medicine available in Bangladesh under many brand names. Below are its uses, dosage, side effects and precautions — and all brands with their current prices.
What is Benzyl Benzoate used for?
- Treatment of scabies infestation.
- Treatment of lice infestation, such as head, body, or pubic lice, when recommended by a healthcare professional.
Dosage & Administration
Adults should use Benzyl Benzoate exactly as directed on the product label or by the prescribing doctor. For scabies, it is generally applied to clean, dry skin over the affected areas and often the whole body below the neck, then washed off after the advised contact time; repeat application may be needed if the doctor recommends it. For lice, it is applied to the affected hairy area and washed out after the directed time. Specific contact time, dilution, and repeat treatment depend on the preparation, strength, age, and skin condition, so follow medical advice.
Side Effects
- Common: temporary burning, stinging, itching, redness, dryness, or skin irritation at the application site.
- Itching may continue for some time after successful scabies treatment due to allergic irritation from dead mites.
- Less common: rash, contact dermatitis, blistering, or worsening skin irritation.
- Serious: allergic reaction such as swelling, severe rash, dizziness, or breathing difficulty; seek urgent medical help if these occur.
Precautions & Warnings
Use with care in children, older adults, people with sensitive skin, eczema, open wounds, severe inflammation, or secondary skin infection. Do not apply to eyes, mouth, genital mucosa, or broken skin, and do not swallow. Wash hands after application unless the hands are being treated. Household contacts and contaminated clothes, towels, and bedding may also need management to prevent reinfestation. Use under a registered doctor's or pharmacist's guidance.
Drug Interactions
- No important food interactions are expected because Benzyl Benzoate is used topically.
- Avoid using other irritating topical products, medicated soaps, strong cleansers, alcohol-based products, or abrasive scrubs on the treated area unless advised.
- Tell the doctor or pharmacist about other skin medicines being used, especially topical corticosteroids or products for eczema, infection, or lice/scabies, as they may affect irritation or treatment response.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity or allergy to benzyl benzoate or any component of the preparation.
- Application to severely inflamed, broken, raw, or infected skin unless specifically advised by a doctor.
- Use in infants or young children without medical supervision.
Pregnancy & Lactation
During pregnancy or breastfeeding, use Benzyl Benzoate only if recommended by a doctor after weighing benefits and risks. Avoid applying it to the breast or nipple area; if accidental contact occurs, wash the area thoroughly before breastfeeding. Follow the shortest effective treatment schedule advised by a healthcare professional.
Storage
Store at room temperature away from excessive heat, direct sunlight, and open flame. Keep the container tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date or if the product has changed appearance or smell.
