IV/IM Injection

Cefotil 1.5 gm/VIAL IV/IM Injection

Generic: Cefuroxime

Manufacturer: Square Cephalosporins Ltd.

Therapeutic class: Second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic

What is Cefotil?

Cefotil 1.5 gm/VIAL iv/im injection by Square Cephalosporins Ltd. contains Cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is prescribed for a variety of bacterial infections, including those of the throat, sinuses, ear, chest, urinary tract, and skin, and is also used for early Lyme disease in some regions. Cefotil is a prescription-only medicine and must be taken exactly as directed by a registered doctor.

Cefuroxime works by interfering with the formation of the bacterial cell wall, the protective layer that keeps bacteria intact. As the wall fails, the bacteria swell and burst, ending the infection. It is effective only against bacteria and will not help viral illnesses such as the common cold, flu, or most coughs and sore throats.

Indications

  • Throat, tonsil, and sinus infections
  • Middle-ear infections
  • Bronchitis and certain chest infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft-tissue infections
  • Early Lyme disease (in regions where it occurs)

Dosage & Administration

The dose of Cefotil depends on the infection. A common adult dose is 250-500 mg twice daily for 5 to 10 days, depending on what is being treated. Take Cefotil tablets with or just after food, which improves absorption and helps the medicine work better.

Children's doses are based on body weight and must be set by a doctor; the suspension is also given with food. Take the doses about 12 hours apart, complete the whole course, and do not stop early even once you feel well.

Side Effects

Cefuroxime is usually well tolerated. Possible side effects include:

  • Diarrhoea, nausea, or vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort or indigestion
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Skin rash and, with longer use, thrush

Rarely, it may cause serious allergic reactions or severe, persistent diarrhoea due to a bowel infection. Stop Cefotil and seek urgent medical attention if you notice facial or throat swelling, difficulty breathing, a spreading rash, or blood in your stools.

Precautions & Warnings

Cefotil is a prescription-only antibiotic — never self-medicate. Take it only when prescribed by a registered doctor, and never buy it over the counter or share it. Always complete the full prescribed course, even after your symptoms improve, because stopping early allows the strongest bacteria to survive and the infection to come back harder to treat.

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin or cephalosporins, or have kidney disease or bowel problems. Antibiotic resistance is a serious national crisis in Bangladesh, and unnecessary use of cephalosporins like Cefuroxime pushes us closer to infections that no longer respond to treatment.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take. Important interactions with Cefuroxime include:

  • Antacids and acid-reducing drugs (such as ranitidine or omeprazole) — can reduce absorption; separate the timing
  • Probenecid — raises cefuroxime levels
  • Warfarin — bleeding risk may increase
  • Oral typhoid vaccine — may be less effective

Contraindications

Do not take Cefotil if you:

  • Are allergic to cefuroxime or other cephalosporin antibiotics
  • Have had a severe allergic reaction to penicillin

Use with caution and tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, a history of bowel disease (colitis), or are prone to allergies. Your doctor will judge whether Cefotil is appropriate for you.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Cefuroxime may be used in pregnancy when the doctor judges it necessary, as cephalosporins are generally considered among the safer antibiotics. Always tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

Small amounts pass into breast milk and it is usually considered compatible with breastfeeding, though the baby may occasionally have loose stools or thrush. Discuss breastfeeding with your doctor before taking Cefotil.

Storage Conditions

Store Cefotil in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture, in its original pack. Reconstituted suspension for children should be kept as advised on the label and used within the stated time. Keep all forms out of children's reach and never use the medicine after the expiry date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I take Cefotil with food?

Cefuroxime tablets are absorbed much better when taken with or just after a meal, so taking Cefotil with food helps more of the medicine reach your bloodstream and fight the infection effectively. Food also reduces the chance of nausea or stomach upset. Try to take each dose at the same times every day, roughly 12 hours apart, with a meal. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush it, as this can affect how it works and leaves a bitter taste.

My symptoms are gone — is it okay to stop Cefotil before the course ends?

No. When your symptoms disappear it means the medicine is winning, but some bacteria usually remain. Stopping Cefotil early gives these survivors a chance to multiply and develop resistance, so the infection can return and may no longer respond to cefuroxime or similar antibiotics. Always take every dose for the full number of days your doctor prescribed. Antibiotic resistance is a serious national crisis in Bangladesh, and completing each course exactly as directed is one of the simplest ways every person can help slow it.

I am allergic to penicillin — can I still take Cefotil?

Cefuroxime is a cephalosporin, a family chemically related to penicillin, so a small number of penicillin-allergic people can also react to it. If your previous reaction to penicillin was mild (for example a minor rash), your doctor may still prescribe Cefotil with care. But if you have ever had a severe reaction — swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or collapse — tell your doctor, who will usually choose a completely different type of antibiotic instead.
