Uplid Sterile Eye Drops 1 mg/ml Eye Drops
Generic: Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride
Manufacturer: Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
Therapeutic class: Topical nasal decongestant (sympathomimetic, alpha-adrenergic agonist)
What is Uplid Sterile Eye Drops?
Uplid Sterile Eye Drops 1 mg/ml eye drops is manufactured by Incepta Pharmaceuticals Ltd.. It contains Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride, a fast-acting topical nasal decongestant used to relieve a blocked nose caused by the common cold, sinusitis and allergic rhinitis. Relief usually begins within minutes and can last up to 10–12 hours. It is for short-term use only — no longer than 3 to 5 days.
Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride works by stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in the blood vessels of the nasal lining. This narrows the swollen vessels, shrinks the congested tissue and opens the nasal passages so air can flow freely again. Because it acts locally inside the nose, very little of the medicine normally reaches the rest of the body when it is used correctly.
Indications
Uplid Sterile Eye Drops is used for the short-term relief of nasal congestion (blocked nose) due to:
- The common cold and flu-like illnesses
- Sinusitis — to ease pressure and help sinus drainage
- Allergic rhinitis and hay fever
- Ear (eustachian tube) congestion associated with colds, when a doctor advises
- Before some nasal examinations or procedures, on a doctor's instruction
It relieves the blockage so you can breathe and sleep more comfortably, but it does not cure the underlying cold, allergy or infection — and it must not be used beyond 3–5 days.
Dosage & Administration
Use Uplid Sterile Eye Drops exactly as directed on the label or by your doctor. The usual adult dose is 2–3 drops or sprays into each nostril twice daily (morning and night). Blow your nose gently first, keep your head upright while spraying, and sniff lightly.
- Never use it for more than 3–5 days in a row. Longer use causes rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa), in which the nose becomes even more blocked than before
- Do not exceed the stated number of doses in 24 hours
- Children: use only a paediatric strength, and only on a doctor's advice — adult-strength drops or spray must never be given to young children
- Do not share your bottle with others, to avoid spreading infection
Side Effects
When used correctly for a few days, Uplid Sterile Eye Drops is usually well tolerated. Possible side effects include:
- Temporary burning, stinging or dryness inside the nose
- Sneezing just after use
- Headache
- Rebound congestion — worsening blockage when the medicine is overused or used beyond 3–5 days
Rarely, enough medicine is absorbed to cause body-wide effects: fast or pounding heartbeat, raised blood pressure, nervousness, dizziness or sleeplessness — more likely with overuse, swallowing the solution or use in small children. Stop the medicine and seek medical advice if these occur.
Precautions & Warnings
- The 3–5 day limit is the most important rule. Using Uplid Sterile Eye Drops longer leads to rebound congestion, and many people then become dependent on the spray for months — if your nose is still blocked after 5 days, see a doctor instead of continuing
- Consult a doctor before use if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, thyroid problems, diabetes, glaucoma or an enlarged prostate causing urinary difficulty
- Do not use it together with other decongestant tablets, syrups or sprays without medical advice
- Use only the paediatric strength for children, as advised by a doctor
- Avoid spraying toward the centre wall (septum) of the nose, and do not share the bottle
- Prolonged use can dry and damage the nasal lining
Drug Interactions
Although Uplid Sterile Eye Drops acts mainly inside the nose, it can interact with some medicines. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you take:
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) — currently or within the last 14 days: combining them with decongestants can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure
- Tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline — may exaggerate blood-pressure effects
- Other decongestants — oral pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine in cold-and-flu remedies: additive effects on heart rate and blood pressure
- Blood-pressure medicines — decongestants can work against them
Always mention every medicine, including over-the-counter cold remedies, before using Uplid Sterile Eye Drops.
Contraindications
Do not use Uplid Sterile Eye Drops if you:
- Are allergic to oxymetazoline or any other ingredient
- Have angle-closure glaucoma
- Have atrophic (dry) rhinitis
- Are taking, or have taken within 14 days, a monoamine oxidase inhibitor
- Have recently had surgery through the nose or skull base (for example, pituitary surgery)
Adult-strength preparations must not be used in infants and young children — serious side effects, including marked drowsiness, can occur. Children should receive only paediatric formulations prescribed by a doctor.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Decongestant sprays narrow blood vessels, so they should not be used in pregnancy without medical advice. Occasional, short-term use at the lowest dose may be permitted by some doctors, but safer options — saline nasal washes, steam inhalation — are usually tried first. Always ask your doctor before using Uplid Sterile Eye Drops while pregnant.
Breastfeeding: Very little oxymetazoline is expected to reach breast milk from nasal use, but data are limited. Use it during breastfeeding only on a doctor's advice, at the lowest effective dose and never beyond 3–5 days.
Storage Conditions
Store Uplid Sterile Eye Drops below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep the cap tightly closed.
- Do not touch the dropper or spray nozzle to the nose, skin or any surface, and wipe the nozzle clean after use
- Use the bottle for one person only
- After first opening, discard the bottle within the period stated on the label (often about one month)
- Keep out of the reach and sight of children — swallowing this medicine is dangerous for a child
- Do not use after the expiry date
Frequently Asked Questions
How many days can I safely use Uplid Sterile Eye Drops?
No more than 3 to 5 days in a row — this is the single most important rule for Uplid Sterile Eye Drops. Used longer, the nasal lining becomes dependent on the medicine and swells up again as each dose wears off, a problem called rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa). Many people then feel they cannot breathe without the spray. If your nose is still blocked after 5 days, stop the spray and see a doctor; saline washes can help in the meantime.
Why does my nose feel more blocked after stopping Uplid Sterile Eye Drops?
This is rebound congestion. After repeated doses, the blood vessels in the nose lose their normal tone and swell strongly once the medicine wears off, so the blockage feels worse than the original cold. The treatment is to stop the decongestant — not to use more of it. Stop the spray (some doctors advise stopping one nostril at a time), use saline washes, and see a doctor, who may prescribe a steroid nasal spray to settle the lining while it recovers over one to two weeks.
Can children use Uplid Sterile Eye Drops?
Only with a doctor's advice, and only in the paediatric strength made for their age. Adult-strength oxymetazoline must never be used in babies or young children — accidental overdose or swallowing can cause serious effects such as deep drowsiness, slow heartbeat and breathing problems. For blocked noses in infants, saline drops and gentle suction are usually the first choice. Always keep the bottle out of children's reach and consult a doctor before using Uplid Sterile Eye Drops in any child.
