Rosutin 5 5 mg Tablet

Generic: Rosuvastatin

Manufacturer: Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Therapeutic class: Statin (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor) — lipid-lowering agent

What is Rosutin 5?

Rosutin 5 5 mg tablet is a product of Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd. containing the generic Rosuvastatin. Rosuvastatin is one of the most potent statins available — milligram for milligram it lowers LDL ("bad") cholesterol more than most other statins — and it is widely prescribed in Bangladesh for high cholesterol and for long-term protection against heart attack and stroke in people with diabetes, hypertension or established heart disease.

It works by blocking HMG-CoA reductase, the liver enzyme responsible for making cholesterol. As the liver produces less, it draws more LDL cholesterol out of the bloodstream. Rosuvastatin lowers LDL and triglycerides, raises HDL ("good") cholesterol modestly, and helps stabilise the fatty plaques lining artery walls, making them less likely to rupture and block a vessel.

Indications

Rosutin 5 is prescribed for:

  • High LDL cholesterol — including inherited (familial) hypercholesterolaemia.
  • Mixed dyslipidaemia — raised cholesterol with raised triglycerides.
  • Prevention of cardiovascular events — reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke and the need for stenting in high-risk people, even with near-normal cholesterol.
  • After heart attack, stroke or angioplasty — usually continued lifelong.
  • Slowing atherosclerosis — progression of artery-wall plaque.

Your doctor selects the dose according to your risk level, kidney function and other medicines.

Dosage & Administration

The dose of Rosutin 5 is decided by your doctor. Treatment commonly starts at 5–10 mg once daily and may be adjusted after 4 weeks based on lipid reports; the usual range is 5–20 mg daily, with 40 mg reserved for severe cases under specialist care. Lower starting doses are used in elderly patients, kidney impairment and in patients of Asian origin, who can have higher blood levels of the drug.

  • Take it once daily at a fixed time, with or without food; many patients keep a night-time routine like other statins, which is perfectly fine.
  • If you forget a dose, skip it if the next is within 12 hours — never take two together.
  • Do not stop Rosutin 5 on your own when reports normalise — the benefit continues only while you take it.

Side Effects

Rosutin 5 is generally well tolerated. Possible effects include:

  • Muscle aches, tenderness or weakness — usually mild; report persistent, unexplained muscle pain promptly, especially with fever or dark urine, since very rare serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) can occur.
  • Headache, dizziness.
  • Digestive upset — nausea, constipation or abdominal pain.
  • Liver enzyme rise — usually without symptoms; periodic liver tests may be advised.
  • Protein or blood traces in urine at high doses — usually transient; your doctor may check urine and kidney function.
  • Small increase in blood sugar — slightly higher diabetes risk in predisposed people, outweighed by heart protection.

Precautions & Warnings

While taking Rosutin 5:

  • Report unexplained muscle pain, cramps or weakness early, particularly with fever or dark urine.
  • Tell your doctor about kidney or liver disease, hypothyroidism, heavy alcohol use, or a family history of muscle disorders before starting.
  • Mention that you take a statin whenever a new antibiotic, antifungal or heart medicine is being prescribed.
  • Statins complement — never replace — healthy diet, exercise, weight control and stopping smoking.
  • Asian patients may need lower doses; do not increase the dose yourself.
  • Use reliable contraception if pregnancy is possible.
  • Attend follow-up lipid, liver and sugar tests as scheduled.

Drug Interactions

Key interactions with Rosutin 5:

  • Ciclosporin — greatly raises rosuvastatin levels; combination generally avoided.
  • Gemfibrozil and other fibrates — added muscle-toxicity risk; doses are limited.
  • Some HIV/HCV protease inhibitor combinations — raise levels; dose restrictions apply.
  • Warfarin — INR can rise; closer monitoring when starting or changing dose.
  • Antacids containing aluminium/magnesium — reduce absorption; take them at least 2 hours after Rosutin 5.
  • Erythromycin — may lower rosuvastatin levels slightly.
  • Unlike atorvastatin, grapefruit juice matters little here, but moderation is still sensible.

Contraindications

Rosutin 5 must not be used in:

  • Active liver disease or persistent unexplained liver-enzyme elevation.
  • Severe kidney impairment — high doses are contraindicated; lower doses only with caution under medical advice.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Known allergy to rosuvastatin or any tablet ingredient.
  • Concurrent ciclosporin therapy.
  • Previous statin-induced severe myopathy or rhabdomyolysis — specialist decision only.
  • The 40 mg dose is additionally avoided in patients with risk factors for muscle toxicity, including Asian ancestry, hypothyroidism and alcohol excess.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy: Rosutin 5 is contraindicated in pregnancy. The developing baby needs cholesterol for normal growth, so statins are stopped before planned conception or as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. Women who can become pregnant should use effective contraception throughout treatment and tell the doctor immediately if a period is missed. Pausing the statin during pregnancy is generally safe for the mother.

Breastfeeding: Rosuvastatin may pass into breast milk and is contraindicated while breastfeeding. Discuss with your doctor when treatment can safely restart after the baby is weaned.

Storage Conditions

Keep Rosutin 5 below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture; do not store it in the bathroom. Keep tablets in the original pack until use and well out of the reach and sight of children. Never take it after the expiry date on the packaging, and return expired medicine to a pharmacy for safe disposal rather than discarding it with household waste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I stop Rosutin 5 when I feel better and my lipid profile becomes normal?

<p>No — never stop Rosutin 5 by yourself. High cholesterol has no symptoms, so feeling well says nothing about your arteries, and a normal lipid report simply proves the tablet is working. Within weeks of stopping, cholesterol returns to its old level and the protection against heart attack and stroke is lost. For people with heart disease, diabetes or high risk, statin therapy is usually lifelong. If side effects or cost trouble you, ask your doctor about adjusting the dose or switching — do not just quit.</p>

Is Rosutin 5 stronger than atorvastatin, and does it matter which one I take?

<p>Milligram for milligram, rosuvastatin lowers LDL cholesterol somewhat more than atorvastatin — for example, 10 mg of rosuvastatin roughly matches 20 mg of atorvastatin. But "stronger" does not automatically mean "better for you": both statins prevent heart attacks and strokes effectively when dosed to reach your LDL target. Your doctor chooses based on your risk level, kidney function, other medicines and how you tolerate the drug. Never switch between statins or change doses on your own; equivalence is not one-to-one.</p>

What should I do if I get muscle pain while taking Rosutin 5?

<p>Mild, short-lived aches after unusual exercise are common and usually unrelated. But muscle pain, tenderness, cramps or weakness that is persistent, affects both sides of the body, or has no clear cause should be reported to your doctor without delay. Seek urgent care if the pain is severe, you feel very weak, or your urine turns dark brown — these can signal rare but serious muscle breakdown. Your doctor may check a blood test (CK), pause the statin, lower the dose, or switch you to another statin. Do not simply stop and stay off treatment without medical advice.</p>
