What is Napa?
Napa 500 mg is one of the most widely used paracetamol brands in Bangladesh, manufactured by Beximco Pharmaceuticals. It relieves mild to moderate pain and reduces fever, and is generally considered one of the safest first-line analgesics when taken at the recommended dose.
Paracetamol works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis in the central nervous system, which lowers the body's temperature set-point and raises the pain threshold.
Indications
- Fever (including dengue, viral fever, post-vaccination fever)
- Headache and migraine
- Toothache and earache
- Muscle ache and body pain
- Menstrual pain (dysmenorrhoea)
- Osteoarthritis pain
- Cold and flu-related discomfort
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 1–2 tablets (500–1000 mg) every 4–6 hours as needed. Maximum 4 g (8 tablets) in 24 hours.
Children (6–12 years): ½–1 tablet 3–4 times daily. Paediatric syrup or suspension is preferred for younger children.
Always keep at least 4 hours between doses and never exceed the daily maximum. Consult a registered doctor for the correct dose for your condition.
Side Effects
Paracetamol is generally well tolerated at recommended doses. Side effects are rare but may include:
- Nausea or stomach discomfort
- Skin rash or allergic reactions (rare)
- Blood disorders such as thrombocytopenia (very rare)
- Liver damage — almost always due to overdose
Precautions & Warnings
Caution: Do not take more than 4 g of paracetamol in 24 hours from all sources combined — many cold & flu combination products also contain paracetamol. Use with caution if you have liver disease, kidney disease, or chronic alcoholism. Prolonged use without medical advice is not recommended; if fever persists beyond 3 days or pain beyond 5 days, consult a doctor.
Drug Interactions
Paracetamol may interact with:
- Warfarin — regular use may increase bleeding risk
- Carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital — increased risk of liver toxicity
- Metoclopramide — faster paracetamol absorption
- Cholestyramine — reduced paracetamol absorption
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to paracetamol, and severe hepatic impairment or active liver disease.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Paracetamol is generally considered safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding at recommended doses (US FDA category B). Even so, pregnant women should take it for the shortest time at the lowest effective dose and consult their doctor first.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Napa tablets can I take in a day?
Adults can take a maximum of 8 tablets (4 g) of Napa 500 mg in 24 hours, with at least 4 hours between doses. Exceeding this can cause serious liver damage.
Can I take Napa on an empty stomach?
Yes, paracetamol can be taken with or without food. Taking it after food may reduce mild stomach discomfort in sensitive people.
Is Napa safe during dengue fever?
Paracetamol is the recommended fever reducer in dengue. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in dengue as they increase bleeding risk. Always follow your doctor's advice.
