What is Monas?

Monas 10 mg is ACME Laboratories' montelukast brand, widely prescribed in Bangladesh for asthma and allergic rhinitis. Montelukast blocks leukotriene receptors, reducing airway inflammation, bronchoconstriction and allergy symptoms.

It is a controller (preventive) medicine — it does not give instant relief during an acute asthma attack.

Indications

  • Chronic asthma (prophylaxis and maintenance)
  • Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction prevention
  • Seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
  • Allergy-related chronic cough (as advised by a doctor)

Dosage & Administration

Adults and adolescents (15+ years): One 10 mg tablet once daily in the evening.

Children: 4 mg or 5 mg chewable tablets are used depending on age — follow the paediatrician's advice.

Take regularly even when symptom-free, as it works by preventing inflammation.

Side Effects

Generally well tolerated. Possible side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Sleep disturbance, vivid dreams
  • Mood or behaviour changes (rare — report to your doctor immediately)

Precautions & Warnings

Caution: Montelukast is not for relieving an acute asthma attack — always keep a fast-acting inhaler (e.g., salbutamol) available. Watch for mood changes, anxiety, depression or unusual behaviour, especially in children, and inform your doctor immediately if these occur.

Drug Interactions

Montelukast has few significant interactions. Phenobarbital and rifampicin may reduce its blood levels. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to montelukast or any component of the tablet.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed (US FDA category B). Limited data in breastfeeding — consult your doctor.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Monas taken at night?

Asthma symptoms typically worsen at night and early morning. Taking montelukast in the evening provides the best protection during these hours.

Does Monas work for an asthma attack?

No. Montelukast is a preventive medicine and cannot stop an acute attack. Use your reliever inhaler for attacks and seek medical help if breathing difficulty continues.
