What is Isoline IV Infusion?

Isoline IV Infusion .9 gm/100 ml iv infusion by General Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Unit-2 contains Sodium Chloride. In Bangladesh it is used according to its dosage form and strength for purposes such as fluid and electrolyte replacement by infusion, dilution of medicines, and moistening or cleansing of the eyes, nose, or airways.

Sodium Chloride supplies sodium and chloride ions and, in sterile saline preparations, helps maintain osmotic balance or provides local hydration. A key caution is that injectable or hypertonic saline can cause fluid overload or high blood sodium if used incorrectly, so it should be used only as directed by a healthcare professional.

Indications

  • Replacement of fluid and sodium/chloride in dehydration or electrolyte loss when prescribed, usually by IV infusion.
  • Vehicle or diluent for compatible injectable medicines, where appropriate.
  • Nasal saline drops or spray for dryness, crusting, or congestion relief and nasal cleansing.
  • Ophthalmic saline drops for eye moistening or rinsing when the product is intended for eye use.
  • Nebuliser saline solution for airway humidification or to help loosen respiratory secretions when recommended by a clinician.
  • Hypertonic sodium chloride for specific medical indications such as severe hyponatraemia, only under close medical supervision.

Dosage & Administration

Dose and frequency depend on the route, concentration, patient age, fluid and electrolyte status, and the clinical condition. IV infusion or injection must be prescribed and monitored by a doctor, with electrolyte checks when needed. Nasal, eye, or nebuliser saline products should be used exactly as directed on the label or by a healthcare professional. Do not use injectable saline in the eyes, nose, or nebuliser unless it is specifically labelled and supplied for that route.

Side Effects

  • Nasal or eye preparations may cause temporary stinging, irritation, watering, sneezing, or dryness.
  • Nebulised saline may cause cough, throat irritation, or rarely bronchospasm/wheezing.
  • IV use may cause pain, redness, swelling, infection, or phlebitis at the injection site.
  • Excessive or inappropriate IV use may cause fluid overload, swelling, high blood pressure, high sodium levels, chloride excess, or metabolic acidosis.
  • Serious symptoms needing urgent care include breathing difficulty, chest discomfort, severe swelling, confusion, seizures, or signs of severe allergic reaction.

Precautions & Warnings

Use caution in people with heart failure, kidney disease, liver cirrhosis, high blood pressure, oedema, high blood sodium, or conditions requiring sodium restriction. IV and hypertonic preparations require medical monitoring, especially in children, older adults, and seriously ill patients. Use only sterile, route-appropriate products and avoid contaminated or opened multidose containers beyond the recommended period. Use under a registered doctor's or pharmacist's guidance.

Drug Interactions

  • Medicines that cause sodium and water retention, such as corticosteroids or some anti-inflammatory medicines, may increase the risk of swelling or high blood pressure with systemic sodium chloride.
  • Diuretics and other medicines affecting fluid or electrolyte balance may require monitoring when IV sodium chloride is used.
  • Changes in sodium intake or IV sodium administration can affect lithium levels; patients taking lithium need medical monitoring.
  • When used as a diluent, sodium chloride must be checked for compatibility with the medicine being mixed.
  • Topical nasal, eye, and nebulised saline generally has few clinically important interactions, but other local medicines should be spaced as advised.

Contraindications

  • Do not use in anyone with known hypersensitivity to the product or any excipient, although true sodium chloride allergy is extremely rare.
  • IV sodium chloride should not be used when sodium or fluid administration is clinically inappropriate, such as significant hypernatraemia, severe fluid overload, or decompensated heart failure, unless a specialist decides otherwise.
  • Hypertonic sodium chloride is contraindicated without a clear medical indication and close monitoring.
  • Do not use any preparation that is cloudy, leaking, contaminated, expired, or not labelled for the intended route.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Saline eye, nasal, and nebuliser preparations are generally considered low risk in pregnancy and breastfeeding when used as directed. IV sodium chloride may be used in pregnancy or lactation when clinically needed, but the dose and monitoring should be decided by a doctor based on fluid and electrolyte status.

Storage Conditions

Store at room temperature as stated on the product label, away from excessive heat, direct sunlight, and contamination. Keep containers tightly closed and out of reach of children. Sterile single-use containers should be discarded after opening; multidose bottles should be used only within the period recommended on the label. Do not freeze unless the label permits it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Isoline IV Infusion safe for children?

Saline products may be used in children when appropriate, but the correct type and amount depend on the route and the child’s condition. IV or hypertonic saline must be prescribed and monitored by a doctor.

What should I do if swelling or breathing difficulty occurs after using Isoline IV Infusion?

Seek urgent medical help if swelling, breathing difficulty, chest discomfort, confusion, seizures, or signs of a severe allergic reaction occur, especially after IV use.

Can I use Isoline IV Infusion during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Saline nasal, eye, and nebuliser products are generally considered low risk when used as directed. IV use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be decided and monitored by a doctor.
