What is Mirabegron?

Mirabegron is a beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist for overactive bladder medicine available in Bangladesh under many brand names. Below are its uses, dosage, side effects and precautions — and all brands with their current prices.

What is Mirabegron used for?

  • Treatment of overactive bladder in adults with symptoms of urinary urgency, increased urinary frequency, and urge urinary incontinence.
  • May be used alone or, in selected patients, with an antimuscarinic bladder medicine when prescribed by a specialist or doctor.

Dosage & Administration

Mirabegron extended-release tablets are usually taken once daily and should be swallowed whole with water; they should not be crushed, chewed, or split. The usual adult dose is often started at a lower strength and may be increased by the doctor depending on response, blood pressure, kidney function, liver function, and other medicines. Follow the exact dose and schedule prescribed by the doctor.

Side Effects

  • Common side effects may include increased blood pressure, headache, dizziness, nasopharyngitis or cold-like symptoms, urinary tract infection, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and fast heartbeat or palpitations.
  • Serious side effects needing urgent medical help include severe allergic reaction or swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat, very high blood pressure, chest pain, severe palpitations or irregular heartbeat, and inability to pass urine.

Precautions & Warnings

Use with caution in people with high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems, severe kidney disease, moderate liver disease, bladder outlet obstruction, or those taking medicines that can cause urinary retention. Blood pressure should be assessed before starting and monitored during treatment. Use this medicine only under the guidance of a registered doctor or pharmacist, and do not change the dose without professional advice.

Drug Interactions

  • Mirabegron can inhibit CYP2D6 and may increase levels or effects of medicines such as metoprolol, carvedilol, desipramine, imipramine, certain antipsychotics, flecainide, and propafenone; monitoring or dose adjustment may be needed.
  • It may increase digoxin exposure; doctors may monitor digoxin levels and adjust the dose if needed.
  • Using with antimuscarinic bladder medicines such as solifenacin, tolterodine, or oxybutynin may increase the risk of urinary retention in susceptible patients.
  • Use caution with other medicines that raise blood pressure or heart rate.
  • No major food interaction is generally expected, but take it consistently as advised by the prescriber.

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity or serious allergic reaction to mirabegron or any component of the tablet.
  • Severe uncontrolled hypertension; mirabegron should not be used when blood pressure is dangerously uncontrolled.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There is limited human safety information for mirabegron in pregnancy and breastfeeding. It should be used during pregnancy only if the doctor decides the potential benefit justifies the possible risk. It is not known whether mirabegron passes into human breast milk, so breastfeeding mothers should use it only after medical advice.

Storage

Store at room temperature, away from excess heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Keep tablets in the original packaging and out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
