Florfenicol

Florfenicol is a veterinary broad-spectrum antibiotic (amphenicol) medicine available in Bangladesh under many brand names. Below are its uses, dosage, side effects and precautions — and all brands with their current prices.

• Veterinary treatment of bacterial infections caused by florfenicol-susceptible organisms, when use is approved for the specific animal species and product.
• Labelled uses may include respiratory disease in cattle or pigs caused by susceptible bacteria.
• Some veterinary formulations may be used for other labelled infections in food-producing animals or aquaculture, only as directed by a veterinarian and local product approval.

There is no standard adult human dosage because Florfenicol is a veterinary antibiotic and should not be used for human self-treatment. In animals, the dose depends on the species, body weight, infection, formulation, route of administration, and legally required withdrawal period. Use only the exact dose and duration prescribed by a registered veterinarian or as stated on the approved product label.

• Injection-site pain, swelling, or inflammation.
• Reduced appetite, reduced water intake, lethargy, or temporary changes in behaviour in animals.
• Diarrhoea, soft stools, or other gastrointestinal upset.
• Possible reproductive effects in breeding animals; use in breeding males or pregnant animals only if the veterinarian considers it appropriate.
• Allergic reactions are uncommon but may include swelling, breathing difficulty, collapse, or severe weakness; seek urgent veterinary help.
• Overdose or prolonged inappropriate use may increase the risk of toxicity and antimicrobial resistance.

Use Florfenicol only in the animal species and age group for which the product is approved. Be careful in animals with liver, kidney, blood, or reproductive problems, and follow withdrawal periods strictly in food-producing animals. Do not use leftover antibiotic or share it between animals without diagnosis. Use under a registered doctor's or pharmacist's guidance; for animals, also follow a registered veterinarian's prescription and monitoring.

• Tell the veterinarian or pharmacist about all other antibiotics, antiparasitic medicines, vaccines, supplements, and feed additives being used.
• Avoid combining with other medicines that may affect bone marrow or blood cell production unless specifically advised.
• Do not mix injectable Florfenicol with other products in the same syringe or infusion unless the approved label or veterinarian instructs this.
• Improper concurrent antibiotic use may reduce effectiveness and increase antimicrobial resistance.

• Do not use in animals with known hypersensitivity to florfenicol or related amphenicol antibiotics.
• Do not use in humans.
• Do not use in animal species, production classes, or routes not permitted by the approved product label.
• Do not use in breeding animals if the product label advises against it, unless a veterinarian specifically determines the benefit outweighs the risk.

For animals that are pregnant, breeding, or lactating, use Florfenicol only when a veterinarian decides it is necessary and permitted by the product label. In food-producing animals, observe all withdrawal periods for meat, milk, eggs, or fish. It is not a medicine for use during human pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Store in the original container at the temperature stated on the label, protected from excessive heat, direct sunlight, and moisture. Keep tightly closed and out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, and discard unused or opened product according to the label and veterinary/pharmacy advice.
