What is Drotaverine Hydrochloride?
Drotaverine Hydrochloride is a antispasmodic medicine available in Bangladesh under many brand names. Below are its uses, dosage, side effects and precautions — and all brands with their current prices.
What is Drotaverine Hydrochloride used for?
- Relief of smooth-muscle spasm and pain in the gastrointestinal tract, such as intestinal cramps.
- Spasm-related pain of the biliary tract, such as biliary colic.
- Spasm-related pain of the urinary tract, such as renal or ureteric colic.
- Menstrual cramps caused by uterine smooth-muscle spasm, when considered appropriate by a doctor.
Dosage & Administration
Adult dosing depends on the condition, severity of pain, dosage form, and the patient’s overall health. Tablets are usually taken by mouth in divided doses, while injection should be given only by a trained healthcare professional. Follow the exact dose and duration prescribed by the doctor; do not increase the dose or use injections without medical supervision.
Side Effects
- Nausea, constipation, or stomach discomfort.
- Headache, dizziness, or sleep disturbance.
- Flushing, sweating, or a feeling of warmth.
- Low blood pressure, palpitations, or fast heartbeat, especially with injectable use.
- Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, swelling, breathing difficulty, or severe dizziness; seek urgent medical help if these occur.
Precautions & Warnings
Use Drotaverine Hydrochloride carefully in people with low blood pressure, heart rhythm problems, significant liver or kidney disease, or a history of drug allergy. Injection should be administered with caution because sudden blood pressure drop can occur. Avoid driving or operating machinery if dizziness occurs. Use this medicine under the guidance of a registered doctor or pharmacist.
Drug Interactions
- Levodopa: Drotaverine Hydrochloride may reduce the anti-Parkinson effect of levodopa and may worsen tremor or rigidity.
- Blood-pressure-lowering medicines: combined use may increase the risk of low blood pressure or dizziness.
- Alcohol: may increase dizziness, drowsiness, or low blood pressure; avoid or limit alcohol while using this medicine.
- Tell the doctor or pharmacist about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal products being used.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity or allergy to drotaverine or any component of the product.
- Severe liver, kidney, or heart failure.
- Significant low blood pressure or serious heart conduction problems, unless a specialist decides otherwise.
Pregnancy & Lactation
During pregnancy, Drotaverine Hydrochloride should be used only if a doctor decides that the expected benefit justifies any possible risk. Safety information in breastfeeding is limited; nursing mothers should use it only on medical advice, and the doctor may recommend monitoring the infant or choosing an alternative.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use tablets or injections after the expiry date, and do not use an injection if the ampoule is damaged or the solution appears cloudy or discoloured.
