Aluminium Oxide + Magnesium Hydroxide

Aluminium Oxide + Magnesium Hydroxide is a antacid medicine available in Bangladesh under many brand names. Below are its uses, dosage, side effects and precautions — and all brands with their current prices.

• Relief of heartburn and acid indigestion.
• Relief of sour stomach or hyperacidity symptoms.
• Symptomatic relief of dyspepsia related to excess gastric acid.
• Adjunctive symptomatic relief in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease or peptic ulcer disease when advised by a doctor.

Adults should use Aluminium Oxide + Magnesium Hydroxide suspension exactly as directed on the product label or by a registered doctor or pharmacist. It is commonly taken after meals and at bedtime when symptoms occur. Shake the bottle well before each dose and use a proper measuring spoon or cup. Do not take more often or for longer than advised; persistent or recurrent symptoms need medical evaluation.

• Common: constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, stomach discomfort, chalky taste or belching.
• With excessive or prolonged use: low phosphate levels, electrolyte imbalance, weakness or bone problems.
• Serious, especially in kidney impairment: high magnesium levels, aluminium accumulation, confusion, drowsiness, low blood pressure or abnormal heart rhythm.
• Rare: allergic reaction such as rash, swelling, wheezing or severe dizziness.

Use caution in people with kidney disease, dehydration, low phosphate levels, bowel obstruction or severe constipation, unexplained abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, or symptoms that persist despite treatment. Elderly patients and children should use it only with appropriate advice. Use under a registered doctor's or pharmacist's guidance, especially if other medicines are being taken or if symptoms are frequent.

• May reduce absorption of many medicines; separate other oral medicines by at least 2–4 hours unless a doctor or pharmacist advises otherwise.
• Important examples include tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, iron, levothyroxine, bisphosphonates, digoxin, some antifungals, and certain antiretroviral medicines.
• May affect medicines that depend on stomach acidity or urine pH for absorption or elimination.
• Alcohol, smoking, large fatty meals, caffeine and spicy foods can worsen acid-related symptoms in some people.

• Known hypersensitivity to aluminium compounds, magnesium hydroxide, or any ingredient of the preparation.
• Severe kidney impairment or kidney failure unless specifically prescribed and monitored by a doctor.
• Suspected bowel obstruction or severe abdominal pain with vomiting, unless assessed by a doctor.

Antacids such as Aluminium Oxide + Magnesium Hydroxide are generally considered compatible with pregnancy and breastfeeding when used occasionally at recommended doses, but prolonged or high-dose use should be avoided unless advised by a doctor. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should seek medical advice if symptoms are frequent, severe or associated with vomiting, weight loss, black stools or difficulty swallowing.
