It treats certain respiratory, throat, ear, skin, and sexually transmitted infections, and is often given for just 3 to 5 days because it stays active in the body for a long time. Zimax is a prescription-only medicine and should be used strictly under a registered doctor's advice.

Azithromycin works by attaching to the bacteria's protein-making machinery (ribosomes) and stopping it from producing the proteins they need to grow and multiply. Deprived of these proteins, the bacteria stop spreading and are cleared by the body. It has no effect on viruses, so it cannot cure colds, flu, or most coughs and sore throats.

• Certain chest infections, including some pneumonias and bronchitis
• Throat, tonsil, and sinus infections in penicillin-allergic patients
• Some ear infections
• Skin and soft-tissue infections
• Several sexually transmitted infections (e.g. chlamydia)
• Some cases of typhoid or traveller's diarrhoea, per doctor

The dose of Zimax depends on the infection but courses are typically short.
