What is Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium?
Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium is a ophthalmic lubricant (artificial tear) medicine available in Bangladesh under many brand names. Below are its uses, dosage, side effects and precautions — and all brands with their current prices.
What is Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium used for?
- Relief of signs and symptoms of dry eye disease or tear film instability.
- Temporary relief of burning, irritation, grittiness, or discomfort due to dryness of the eye.
- Lubrication of the ocular surface in conditions where additional artificial tears are recommended by a clinician.
Dosage & Administration
For adults, Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium eye drops are usually applied as drops into the affected eye or eyes when needed, or as directed by a doctor. The exact frequency depends on the severity of dryness and the specific product. Wash hands before use, avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface, and close the cap after use. If using other eye medicines, leave an interval between products as advised by a doctor or pharmacist.
Side Effects
- Common: temporary blurred vision, mild stinging or burning, eye irritation, watery eyes, or a sticky feeling after instillation.
- Less common: redness, itching, eyelid discomfort, or sensitivity to ingredients/preservatives.
- Serious: allergic reaction, eye pain, worsening redness or irritation, discharge, swelling around the eye, or persistent/changed vision; seek medical help if these occur.
Precautions & Warnings
People with ongoing eye pain, eye injury, eye infection, sudden vision changes, marked redness, or symptoms that persist or worsen should be assessed by a registered doctor. Remove soft contact lenses before using preserved eye drops unless the product label or clinician says it is suitable for use with lenses; wait before reinserting lenses as advised. Do not use if the solution is discoloured, cloudy, contaminated, or the seal is broken. Use under a registered doctor's or pharmacist's guidance, especially in children, after eye surgery, or when using other eye medicines.
Drug Interactions
- No major systemic drug interactions are expected because ocular Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium has minimal systemic absorption.
- Other eye drops may dilute or wash out the lubricant; separate different eye preparations by an appropriate interval as advised by a doctor or pharmacist.
- Eye ointments or gels are generally used after drops if more than one ophthalmic product is prescribed.
- Contact lenses may interact with preservatives in some products; follow the label and professional advice.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity or allergy to Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium or any component of the eye drop formulation.
- Do not use a contaminated, discoloured, or expired product.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium eye drops are generally considered low risk during pregnancy and breastfeeding because systemic absorption from the eye is minimal. However, pregnant or breastfeeding women should use it as directed and consult a doctor or pharmacist if symptoms are severe, persistent, or if other eye medicines are being used.
Storage
Store at room temperature, away from excessive heat, direct sunlight, and contamination. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children. Do not touch the dropper tip. Follow the product label for discard-after-opening instructions; multi-dose eye drops are commonly discarded a few weeks after opening unless the label states otherwise, and single-use containers should be discarded after use.
