What is Fexo?
Fexo 120 mg is Square Pharmaceuticals' fexofenadine brand, a second-generation antihistamine that relieves allergy symptoms without causing significant drowsiness.
It blocks H₁ histamine receptors, controlling sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes and skin rashes.
Indications
- Seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
- Perennial allergic rhinitis
- Chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives)
- Allergic skin itching
Dosage & Administration
Adults and children 12+ years: One 120 mg tablet once daily for allergic rhinitis. For chronic urticaria, doctors often prescribe 180 mg once daily.
Take with water; avoid taking with fruit juice as it can reduce absorption.
Side Effects
Usually well tolerated. Possible effects:
- Headache
- Mild drowsiness (much less than older antihistamines)
- Dizziness
- Nausea, dry mouth
Precautions & Warnings
Caution: Although classed as non-sedating, assess how it affects you before driving or operating machinery. Use cautiously in kidney impairment — dose adjustment may be needed. Do not take antacids containing aluminium or magnesium within 2 hours of Fexo.
Drug Interactions
Aluminium/magnesium antacids reduce fexofenadine absorption. Erythromycin and ketoconazole can raise its blood level. Avoid taking with fruit juices (apple, orange, grapefruit).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any component of the formulation.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed (US FDA category C). Caution in breastfeeding — consult your doctor first.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Fexo make you sleepy?
Fexofenadine is a non-sedating antihistamine, so significant drowsiness is uncommon. A small number of people may still feel mildly sleepy — check your own response before driving.
How long can I take Fexo for allergies?
For seasonal allergies it is commonly taken during the allergy period. For chronic urticaria, doctors may continue it for weeks to months. Long-term use should be reviewed by a doctor.
