What is Antacid Plus?
Antacid Plus 200 mg + 400 mg + 30 mg/5 ml suspension by Pharmik Laboratories Ltd. is an antacid and antiflatulent medicine containing Aluminium Oxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone. In Bangladesh, it is commonly used for short-term symptomatic relief of heartburn, acid indigestion, sour stomach and gas-related bloating.
Aluminium Oxide + Magnesium Hydroxide + Simethicone works by neutralising excess stomach acid, while simethicone helps break up gas bubbles in the gut. A key caution is that antacids can affect the absorption of many other medicines, so separate dosing and seek professional advice if you take other regular medicines.
Indications
- Symptomatic relief of heartburn and acid indigestion.
- Relief of dyspepsia or sour stomach associated with excess gastric acid.
- Relief of bloating, pressure or discomfort due to trapped gas.
- Adjunctive symptomatic relief in conditions such as gastritis or gastro-oesophageal reflux when advised by a healthcare professional.
Dosage & Administration
Adults should use the suspension as directed on the product label or as prescribed by a doctor. It is commonly taken after meals and at bedtime when symptoms occur. Shake the bottle well before each dose, use a proper measuring spoon or cup, and do not exceed the recommended amount. If symptoms persist, recur frequently, or worsen, consult a registered doctor rather than continuing self-treatment.
Side Effects
- Constipation, especially from the aluminium component.
- Diarrhoea or loose stools, especially from the magnesium component.
- Nausea, stomach cramps, chalky taste or mild abdominal discomfort.
- Rare but serious problems with prolonged or excessive use include electrolyte disturbances, high magnesium levels, low phosphate levels, and worsening kidney-related complications.
- Seek urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, black or bloody stools, unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, or signs of an allergic reaction.
Precautions & Warnings
Use with caution in people with kidney disease, dehydration, bowel obstruction or severe constipation, low-phosphate states, or those needing a low-magnesium diet. Do not use for prolonged periods or in high amounts unless advised by a healthcare professional, as aluminium and magnesium can accumulate or disturb body minerals, especially in kidney impairment. Children, older adults, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people taking multiple medicines should seek advice before use. Use this medicine under the guidance of a registered doctor or pharmacist.
Drug Interactions
- May reduce absorption of tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics; separate doses as advised by a healthcare professional.
- May reduce absorption of levothyroxine, iron, bisphosphonates, digoxin, some antifungals and some antiretroviral medicines.
- Can affect the absorption or urinary excretion of medicines whose handling depends on stomach or urine pH.
- Avoid taking other oral medicines at the same time unless a doctor or pharmacist confirms it is appropriate; spacing doses by a few hours is often recommended.
- Alcohol, spicy foods, smoking and large fatty meals may worsen reflux or dyspepsia symptoms in some people.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to aluminium compounds, magnesium hydroxide, simethicone, or any ingredient of the formulation.
- Severe kidney impairment unless specifically prescribed and monitored by a doctor.
- Suspected or confirmed bowel obstruction, severe constipation, or significant intestinal blockage symptoms.
- Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, gastrointestinal bleeding, or unexplained weight loss should be medically assessed before use.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Antacid components and simethicone are generally considered to have low systemic absorption when used occasionally at recommended doses, but pregnancy and breastfeeding require caution. Use only when needed and preferably after advice from a registered doctor or pharmacist, especially if symptoms are frequent, severe, or require repeated dosing.
Storage Conditions
Store at room temperature, away from excessive heat, direct sunlight and freezing. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Shake well before use and do not use after the expiry date or if the suspension looks or smells unusual.
