High Blood Pressure: 10 Proven Ways to Control It Naturally

High blood pressure (hypertension) is called the "silent killer" because it usually has no symptoms until it damages your heart, brain, kidneys or eyes. In Bangladesh, nearly one in four adults lives with hypertension, and about half are unaware of it. The good news: lifestyle changes can lower your blood pressure significantly — sometimes as much as medication.

What is considered high blood pressure?

Blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg or higher on repeated measurements is considered high. Between 120/80 and 139/89 is "elevated" — a warning zone where lifestyle changes matter most. Measure after sitting quietly for 5 minutes, and confirm with readings on at least two different days.

10 proven ways to lower blood pressure

  1. Cut down salt. Keep salt under 5 g (one teaspoon) a day. Avoid extra table salt, pickles, chips, processed snacks and shutki in excess.
  2. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Potassium-rich foods — banana, leafy greens, beans — help balance sodium.
  3. Walk 30 minutes daily. Brisk walking five days a week can drop systolic pressure by 5–8 mmHg.
  4. Lose extra weight. Every 1 kg of weight loss reduces blood pressure by roughly 1 mmHg.
  5. Quit smoking and tobacco. Each cigarette or jorda/gul use raises blood pressure for hours.
  6. Limit tea-coffee and avoid energy drinks if your pressure is uncontrolled.
  7. Sleep 7–8 hours. Poor sleep and untreated snoring (sleep apnoea) raise blood pressure.
  8. Manage stress. Prayer, meditation, deep breathing for 10 minutes daily measurably lowers pressure.
  9. Check your pressure regularly. A home BP machine is a worthwhile investment for every family.
  10. Take prescribed medicine every day. Never stop blood pressure medication on your own — even when you feel fine.

When should you see a doctor?

See a doctor promptly if your readings stay at or above 140/90, or urgently if you have a reading above 180/120, severe headache, chest pain, breathlessness or blurred vision. A doctor will assess your overall risk and decide whether you need medication along with lifestyle changes.
