What is X-ray of Defecography?

Defecography is a specialized X-ray procedure used to assess the function of the rectum and pelvic floor during defecation. It helps diagnose conditions such as rectal prolapse, bowel incontinence, constipation, or pelvic floor dysfunction.

During the procedure, a contrast medium, often barium or a similar substance, is introduced into the rectum. The patient is then asked to sit on a commode or use a simulated defecation position while X-rays capture the movement of the contrast as the patient attempts to pass it.

This process provides real-time images of the rectum and anal canal, helping to identify any structural or functional abnormalities. Preparation may include fasting or bowel cleansing.

What to expect & how to prepare

An X-ray takes a picture of bones or chest structures in a few seconds. A radiographer positions you, asks you to hold still and briefly hold your breath for chest views. Nothing is injected.

• Eat and drink normally: a plain X-ray needs no diet restriction before your appointment.
• Metal: remove jewellery, coins, belts and clothing with zips or hooks over the area, or change into a gown as advised.
• Positioning: you may be asked to stand, sit or lie in a specific position — for weight-bearing views you will stand on the affected limb.
• Bring earlier films: previous X-rays of the same area help with comparison.

A plain X-ray uses a small dose of ionising radiation. Tell the radiographer before the exposure if you are pregnant or think you might be.
