What is Widal Test?

The Widal test is used to diagnose typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi bacteria. The test detects antibodies (agglutinins) against the O (somatic) and H (flagellar) antigens of these bacteria in the blood.

A blood sample is drawn and mixed with specific antigens to observe if agglutination (clumping) occurs. No special preparation is required.

Risks include mild discomfort during the blood draw. A positive result suggests an active or past infection, but results need to be interpreted with clinical symptoms, as false positives or negatives can occur.

Widal Test is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis.
