What is VDRL?

The VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) test is used to detect syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum. The test detects antibodies produced in response to the infection.

A blood sample is drawn, and the serum is tested for the presence of these antibodies. No special preparation is typically required.

Risks include mild discomfort during the blood draw. A positive result suggests syphilis, while a negative result generally rules out the infection, though false negatives can occur, especially in early stages.

Further testing may be required for confirmation.

What to expect & how to prepare

VDRL is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis. Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.

• Fasting: some tests require 8–12 hours of fasting (water is usually allowed). Ask the centre when you book.
• Medication: tell the lab about any medicines or supplements you take, as some can affect results.
• Timing: certain hormone and biochemistry tests are best done in the morning — confirm the recommended time.
