What is USCD?

USCD stands for Ultrasound Contrast Dye, which is used in certain ultrasound procedures to enhance the clarity and detail of images, particularly in examining blood flow or organ structure. The contrast dye improves the visualization of blood vessels, the heart, and certain soft tissues, making it easier to detect abnormalities like tumors or blockages.

During the procedure, the contrast agent is injected into the bloodstream, and the ultrasound probe captures the enhanced images in real time. It is commonly used in liver, kidney, or heart evaluations.

Preparation usually involves fasting, and the procedure is generally safe, with minimal risks such as allergic reactions.

What to expect & how to prepare

USCD is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis. Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.
