What is TC?

TC - RBC (Total Count of Red Blood Cells) is a blood test that measures the number of red blood cells in a specific volume of blood. RBCs transport oxygen from the lungs to the body and carry carbon dioxide back for exhalation.

Normal RBC counts vary by age, gender, and health status. Abnormal counts can indicate health issues: a low RBC count (anemia) may result from nutritional deficiencies, blood loss, or chronic diseases, while a high RBC count (polycythemia) could suggest dehydration, lung disease, or bone marrow disorders.

RBC count is part of a Complete Blood Count (CBC) used to assess overall health.

What to expect & how to prepare

TC is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis. Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.

• Fasting: some tests require 8–12 hours of fasting (water is usually allowed). Ask the centre when you book.
• Medication: tell the lab about any medicines or supplements you take, as some can affect results.
• Timing: certain hormone and biochemistry tests are best done in the morning — confirm the recommended time.
• Report: always have a registered doctor interpret your TC result rather than self-diagnosing.
