What is T3?

T3 (Triiodothyronine) is a thyroid hormone that helps regulate metabolism, growth, and energy production. It is more active than T4 but is present in smaller amounts.

The T3 test is used to evaluate thyroid function, particularly in cases of suspected hyperthyroidism (excessive thyroid hormone) or hypothyroidism (insufficient thyroid hormone). High T3 levels may indicate conditions like Graves' disease or thyroiditis, while low T3 levels can suggest hypothyroidism, malnutrition, or illness.

T3 testing is often performed alongside T4 and TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) for a complete thyroid assessment.

What to expect & how to prepare

T3 is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis. Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.

• Fasting: some tests require 8–12 hours of fasting (water is usually allowed). Ask the centre when you book.
• Medication: tell the lab about any medicines or supplements you take, as some can affect results.
• Timing: certain hormone and biochemistry tests are best done in the morning — confirm the recommended time.
