What is PTC?

PTC (Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholangiography) is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure used to visualize the bile ducts. It involves the insertion of a needle through the skin into the liver to inject contrast dye into the bile ducts, allowing for imaging via X-ray.

PTC is primarily used to identify blockages, stones, or strictures in the bile ducts, often related to conditions like cholangiocarcinoma, gallstones, or strictures from surgery. It can also be used to place stents to relieve obstructions or drain bile in cases of jaundice.

Risks include infection, bleeding, bile leakage, or injury to surrounding organs.

What to expect & how to prepare

PTC is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis. Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.

• Fasting: some tests require 8–12 hours of fasting (water is usually allowed). Ask the centre when you book.
• Medication: tell the lab about any medicines or supplements you take, as some can affect results.
• Timing: certain hormone and biochemistry tests are best done in the morning — confirm the recommended time.
• Report: always have a registered doctor interpret your PTC result rather than self-diagnosing.
