What is PH?

The pH test measures the acidity or alkalinity of a body fluid, such as urine, saliva, or vaginal secretions. Preparation varies by fluid type, but for urine, avoiding certain foods or medications may be advised.

During the test, a sample is collected and analyzed with pH strips or a meter. Risks are minimal, but discomfort may occur during sample collection.

Results show the pH level, helping diagnose conditions like kidney disease, urinary tract infections, or metabolic disorders. Abnormal pH levels can be influenced by diet, medications, or hydration status, affecting test accuracy.

What to expect & how to prepare

PH is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis. Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.

• Fasting: some tests require 8–12 hours of fasting (water is usually allowed). Ask the centre when you book.
• Medication: tell the lab about any medicines or supplements you take, as some can affect results.
• Timing: certain hormone and biochemistry tests are best done in the morning — confirm the recommended time.
• Report: always have a registered doctor interpret your PH result rather than self-diagnosing.
