What is OPG (Open & Close )?

OPG (Open & Close) refers to a type of functional imaging used in the context of evaluating the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). It involves capturing X-ray images of the jaw and TMJ while the patient moves their mouth through opening and closing motions.

This dynamic imaging technique helps assess joint function, identify issues like jaw misalignment, TMJ disorders, disc displacement, or arthritis, and evaluate the relationship between the teeth, jaw, and surrounding structures. The ""open and close"" motion provides insight into how the joint behaves during movement, aiding in diagnosis and treatment planning for conditions affecting the TMJ.

What to expect & how to prepare

An X-ray takes a picture of bones or chest structures in a few seconds. A radiographer positions you, asks you to hold still and briefly hold your breath for chest views. Nothing is injected.

• Eat and drink normally: a plain X-ray needs no diet restriction before your appointment.
• Metal: remove jewellery, coins, belts and clothing with zips or hooks over the area, or change into a gown as advised.
• Positioning: you may be asked to stand, sit or lie in a specific position — for weight-bearing views you will stand on the affected limb.
• Bring earlier films: previous X-rays of the same area help with comparison.

A plain X-ray uses a small dose of ionising radiation. Tell the radiographer before the exposure if you are pregnant or think you might be.
