What is MRI S.I Joint?

An MRI of the sacroiliac (S.I.) joint is an imaging procedure used to evaluate the joints that connect the spine to the pelvis.

It helps diagnose conditions such as inflammation, arthritis, infections, or joint degeneration that may cause pain or discomfort in the lower back and hips. During the procedure, the patient lies on a table, and the lower back and pelvis are positioned inside the MRI machine, which uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images.

No special preparation is usually required, and the scan is non-invasive, providing valuable information for diagnosis and treatment planning.

What to expect & how to prepare

An MRI scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — not X-rays — to build detailed images of soft tissue. You lie still inside the scanner while it makes loud knocking noises; ear protection is provided.

• Metal and implants: tell the centre before your appointment about any pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, insulin pump, metal fragment or recent surgery — some implants make MRI unsafe.
• Belongings: you will remove watches, jewellery, cards, hairpins and anything metallic, and you may be asked to change into a gown.
• Fasting: routine MRI needs no fasting. Fasting is only needed for certain contrast or abdominal studies, and the centre will tell you when it applies.
• Duration: an MRI usually takes longer than an X-ray — ask the centre how long your scan is scheduled for.

MRI uses no ionising radiation. If a contrast injection is planned, tell the staff about kidney disease, previous contrast reactions, allergies, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
