What is MRI of Whole Body?

An MRI of the whole body is a comprehensive imaging procedure used to assess multiple organs and structures throughout the body, including the brain, spine, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, and bones. It helps detect conditions such as tumors, infections, inflammation, or abnormalities in various systems.

During the procedure, the patient lies on a table, and the body is moved through the MRI machine, which uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to generate detailed images. The procedure is non-invasive, typically takes 60 to 90 minutes, and may require fasting beforehand.

What to expect & how to prepare

An MRI scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — not X-rays — to build detailed images of soft tissue. You lie still inside the scanner while it makes loud knocking noises; ear protection is provided.

• Metal and implants: tell the centre before your appointment about any pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, insulin pump, metal fragment or recent surgery — some implants make MRI unsafe.
• Belongings: you will remove watches, jewellery, cards, hairpins and anything metallic, and you may be asked to change into a gown.
• Fasting: routine MRI needs no fasting. Fasting is only needed for certain contrast or abdominal studies, and the centre will tell you when it applies.
• Duration: an MRI usually takes longer than an X-ray — ask the centre how long your scan is scheduled for.

MRI uses no ionising radiation. If a contrast injection is planned, tell the staff about kidney disease, previous contrast reactions, allergies, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
