What is MRI of Thyroid Gland?

An MRI of the thyroid gland is a non-invasive imaging procedure used to assess the structure of the thyroid, a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck. The scan helps diagnose thyroid conditions such as nodules, tumors, inflammation, or cysts.

During the procedure, the patient lies on a table while a magnetic field and radio waves create detailed images. No special preparation is required, though patients may be asked to avoid eating before the scan.

What to expect & how to prepare

An MRI scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — not X-rays — to build detailed images of soft tissue. You lie still inside the scanner while it makes loud knocking noises; ear protection is provided.

MRI uses no ionising radiation. If a contrast injection is planned, tell the staff about kidney disease, previous contrast reactions, allergies, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
