What is MRI of DWIBS?

MRI of DWIBS (Diffusion-Weighted Imaging with Background Suppression) is a specialized imaging technique used to detect and evaluate tumors, infections, and inflammation, particularly in the abdominal and pelvic areas. It measures the movement of water molecules in tissues, highlighting areas with restricted water diffusion, which is common in cancerous or inflamed tissues.

DWIBS is valuable for detecting malignancies, evaluating inflammatory conditions, and mapping lymph nodes for cancer staging. During the scan, the patient remains still as high-resolution images are taken.

No special preparation is usually required, though fasting may be necessary. Risks are minimal, with rare allergic reactions to contrast dye.

What to expect & how to prepare

An MRI scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — not X-rays — to build detailed images of soft tissue. You lie still inside the scanner while it makes loud knocking noises; ear protection is provided.

• Metal and implants: tell the centre before your appointment about any pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, insulin pump, metal fragment or recent surgery — some implants make MRI unsafe.
• Belongings: you will remove watches, jewellery, cards, hairpins and anything metallic, and you may be asked to change into a gown.
• Fasting: routine MRI needs no fasting. Fasting is only needed for certain contrast or abdominal studies, and the centre will tell you when it applies.
