What is MRI of Chest?

MRI of the chest is a detailed imaging procedure used to examine the heart, lungs, blood vessels, and chest wall, especially when other methods like X-rays or CT scans are insufficient. It helps diagnose heart disease, lung conditions, tumors, infections, or vascular issues.

The test uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create images, and contrast dye may be used for clearer images. No special preparation is typically needed, though fasting may be required if contrast is used.

What to expect & how to prepare

An MRI scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — not X-rays — to build detailed images of soft tissue. You lie still inside the scanner while it makes loud knocking noises; ear protection is provided.

• Metal and implants: tell the centre before your appointment about any pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, insulin pump, metal fragment or recent surgery — some implants make MRI unsafe.
• Belongings: you will remove watches, jewellery, cards, hairpins and anything metallic, and you may be asked to change into a gown.
