What is MRI & MRV of Brain?

MRI & MRV of the brain is a dual imaging procedure used to assess both the brain’s structure and its venous system. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) captures detailed images of brain tissue, helping to diagnose conditions like tumors, strokes, and neurodegenerative diseases.

MRV (Magnetic Resonance Venography) specifically examines the brain's veins, detecting issues like venous thrombosis, blockages, or abnormal blood flow. During the procedure, you will lie still in an MRI scanner, and a contrast dye may be injected to enhance the clarity of the images.

Fasting is usually not required, but may be recommended if contrast is used. Risks include allergic reactions to the contrast dye and mild discomfort from being in a confined space.

The results provide essential information for diagnosing both structural and venous abnormalities in the brain.

What to expect & how to prepare

An MRI scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — not X-rays — to build detailed images of soft tissue. You lie still inside the scanner while it makes loud knocking noises; ear protection is provided.

• Metal and implants: tell the centre before your appointment about any pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, insulin pump, metal fragment or recent surgery — some implants make MRI unsafe.
• Belongings: you will remove watches, jewellery, cards, hairpins and anything metallic, and you may be asked to change into a gown.
• Fasting: routine MRI needs no fasting. Fasting is only needed for certain contrast or abdominal studies, and the centre will tell you when it applies.
• Duration: an MRI usually takes longer than an X-ray — ask the centre how long your scan is scheduled for.

MRI uses no ionising radiation. If a contrast injection is planned, tell the staff about kidney disease, previous contrast reactions, allergies, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
