What is MRI & MRS of Brain?

MRI & MRS of the brain is an advanced imaging procedure that combines two techniques to assess both the structure and metabolic activity of the brain. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) provides detailed images of the brain’s anatomy, helping diagnose conditions like tumors, strokes, or neurodegenerative diseases.

MRS (Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy) measures the chemical composition of brain tissues, assessing metabolites like choline, creatine, and N-acetylaspartate, which can help identify abnormalities such as cancer, infections, or metabolic disorders. During the procedure, you will lie still in an MRI scanner, and a contrast dye may be used to enhance the images.

Fasting is typically not necessary, though it may be required if contrast is used. Risks include allergic reactions to contrast dye and mild discomfort from staying still.

What to expect & how to prepare

An MRI scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — not X-rays — to build detailed images of soft tissue. You lie still inside the scanner while it makes loud knocking noises; ear protection is provided.

• Metal and implants: tell the centre before your appointment about any pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, insulin pump, metal fragment or recent surgery — some implants make MRI unsafe.
• Belongings: you will remove watches, jewellery, cards, hairpins and anything metallic, and you may be asked to change into a gown.
• Fasting: routine MRI needs no fasting. Fasting is only needed for certain contrast or abdominal studies, and the centre will tell you when it applies.
• Duration: an MRI usually takes longer than an X-ray — ask the centre how long your scan is scheduled for.

MRI uses no ionising radiation. If a contrast injection is planned, tell the staff about kidney disease, previous contrast reactions, allergies, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
