What is MRI & MRA of Brain?

MRI & MRA of the brain is a combined imaging procedure used to assess both the brain's structure (MRI) and its blood vessels (MRA). The MRI provides detailed images of the brain, helping diagnose conditions like tumors, strokes, or multiple sclerosis, while the MRA focuses on the blood vessels, detecting aneurysms, stenosis, or other vascular issues.

During the procedure, you'll lie on a table that moves into the MRI scanner, and a contrast dye may be injected to enhance the images. No special preparation is typically required, though fasting might be advised.

Risks include allergic reactions to the contrast dye and discomfort from being in a confined space. The results offer valuable information for diagnosing neurological and vascular conditions.

What to expect & how to prepare

An MRI scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — not X-rays — to build detailed images of soft tissue. You lie still inside the scanner while it makes loud knocking noises; ear protection is provided.

• Metal and implants: tell the centre before your appointment about any pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, insulin pump, metal fragment or recent surgery — some implants make MRI unsafe.
• Belongings: you will remove watches, jewellery, cards, hairpins and anything metallic, and you may be asked to change into a gown.
• Fasting: routine MRI needs no fasting. Fasting is only needed for certain contrast or abdominal studies, and the centre will tell you when it applies.
• Duration: an MRI usually takes longer than an X-ray — ask the centre how long your scan is scheduled for.

MRI uses no ionising radiation. If a contrast injection is planned, tell the staff about kidney disease, previous contrast reactions, allergies, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
