What is MRI Enterography?

MRI Enterography is a specialized imaging technique used to visualize the small intestine and surrounding structures, primarily for diagnosing gastrointestinal conditions. It helps detect issues like Crohn’s disease, tumors, inflammation, or blockages.

During the procedure, you will drink a contrast liquid to help highlight the intestines, and an MRI scan is performed while you lie still on a table. Sometimes, a contrast dye may also be injected into a vein to enhance the images.

Typically, no special preparation is required, but fasting for several hours before the test may be necessary. Risks are minimal but can include allergic reactions to the contrast dye or mild discomfort.

An MRI scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — not X-rays — to build detailed images of soft tissue. You lie still inside the scanner while it makes loud knocking noises; ear protection is provided.

• Metal and implants: tell the centre before your appointment about any pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, insulin pump, metal fragment or recent surgery — some implants make MRI unsafe.
• Belongings: you will remove watches, jewellery, cards, hairpins and anything metallic, and you may be asked to change into a gown.
• Fasting: routine MRI needs no fasting. Fasting is only needed for certain contrast or abdominal studies, and the centre will tell you when it applies.
• Duration: an MRI usually takes longer than an X-ray — ask the centre how long your scan is scheduled for.

MRI uses no ionising radiation. If a contrast injection is planned, tell the staff about kidney disease, previous contrast reactions, allergies, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
