What is MRCP?

MRCP (Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses MRI to visualize the bile ducts, gallbladder, and pancreatic ducts. It helps diagnose conditions such as gallstones, bile duct blockages, pancreatitis, and tumors.

During the procedure, you will lie on a table that moves into the MRI scanner, which takes detailed images. A contrast dye may be injected to improve clarity.

No special preparation is usually needed, though fasting for several hours before the test may be required. Risks are minimal but may include allergic reactions to the contrast dye and mild discomfort from lying still.

Results provide valuable information for diagnosing digestive and pancreatic conditions.

What to expect & how to prepare

MRCP is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis. Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.

• Fasting: some tests require 8–12 hours of fasting (water is usually allowed). Ask the centre when you book.
• Medication: tell the lab about any medicines or supplements you take, as some can affect results.
• Timing: certain hormone and biochemistry tests are best done in the morning — confirm the recommended time.
