What is LDL?

LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol is often referred to as ""bad"" cholesterol. The LDL test measures the amount of this cholesterol in the blood, which can build up in arteries and increase the risk of heart disease or stroke.

A blood sample is typically drawn after fasting for 9–12 hours. Risks are minimal, generally limited to slight discomfort at the puncture site.

High LDL levels are a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, while low levels are desirable for heart health. Results are interpreted with other lipid panel components to assess heart disease risk and guide treatment.
