What is Iron?

The iron test measures iron levels in the blood to evaluate iron metabolism and diagnose conditions like anemia or iron overload. It is often part of an iron panel, including ferritin, transferrin, and total iron-binding capacity (TIBC).

Blood is drawn from a vein, with minimal preparation, though fasting may be required. Risks are minor, such as slight bruising at the puncture site.

Low iron levels indicate anemia or nutritional deficiencies, while high levels suggest hemochromatosis or chronic diseases. Results are interpreted alongside other tests and clinical findings.

What to expect & how to prepare

Iron is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis. Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.

• Fasting: some tests require 8–12 hours of fasting (water is usually allowed). Ask the centre when you book.
• Medication: tell the lab about any medicines or supplements you take, as some can affect results.
• Timing: certain hormone and biochemistry tests are best done in the morning — confirm the recommended time.
• Report: always have a registered doctor interpret your Iron result rather than self-diagnosing.
