What is IgM?

Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is one of the five classes of antibodies produced by the immune system and is primarily involved in the body's initial defense against infections. It is the largest antibody and is typically the first to be produced in response to an infection.

IgM is predominantly found in blood and lymphatic fluid and plays a crucial role in recognizing and neutralizing pathogens like bacteria and viruses. Elevated levels of IgM can indicate an acute or recent infection, certain autoimmune conditions, or chronic immune responses.

Low levels may point to immune deficiencies or other underlying conditions. IgM testing helps diagnose infections and monitor immune system health.

What to expect & how to prepare

IgM is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis. Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.

• Fasting: some tests require 8–12 hours of fasting (water is usually allowed). Ask the centre when you book.
• Medication: tell the lab about any medicines or supplements you take, as some can affect results.
• Timing: certain hormone and biochemistry tests are best done in the morning — confirm the recommended time.
