What is HMB45?

HMB45 (Human Melanoma Black 45) is a monoclonal antibody used in immunohistochemistry to detect melanocytic tumors, particularly melanoma. It targets a premelanosomal glycoprotein (gp100), which is expressed in melanocytic cells.

HMB45 is most useful for identifying malignant melanoma, especially in distinguishing it from other tumors, and it can also highlight areas of melanocytic differentiation in ambiguous lesions. The staining pattern is typically cytoplasmic, with varying intensities depending on tumor activity.
