What is ESR?

ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) is a blood test that measures how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube in an hour. It indicates inflammation in the body.

Elevated ESR levels may suggest infections, autoimmune diseases (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, lupus), or other inflammatory conditions.

It is a non-specific test and often used alongside other investigations to diagnose and monitor diseases.

What to expect & how to prepare

ESR is performed at a diagnostic centre or hospital lab. A trained technician collects the required sample (commonly a blood draw, urine sample, swab or an imaging scan, depending on the test) and sends it to the lab for analysis. Most routine tests take only a few minutes to sample, with reports typically ready the same day or within 24–48 hours.

• Fasting: some tests require 8–12 hours of fasting (water is usually allowed). Ask the centre when you book.
• Medication: tell the lab about any medicines or supplements you take, as some can affect results.
• Timing: certain hormone and biochemistry tests are best done in the morning — confirm the recommended time.
• Report: always have a registered doctor interpret your ESR result rather than self-diagnosing.
