What is EMG (Both Multiple Side)?

EMG (Electromyography) is a diagnostic test that measures the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during contraction. It involves inserting small electrodes (or needles) into the muscle tissue to record the electrical signals generated by muscle fibers.

EMG helps evaluate muscle function and diagnose conditions like muscle weakness, nerve damage, carpal tunnel syndrome, herniated discs, and various neuromuscular disorders. It is often used alongside nerve conduction studies (NCS) to assess the health of muscles and the nerves controlling them.

The test is generally well-tolerated, though some discomfort from needle insertion may occur.

What to expect & how to prepare

Small electrodes are placed on the skin to record electrical activity from nerves, muscles or the brain. Nerve studies use brief, mild electrical pulses that can feel like a tap or twitch.

• Skin: come with clean skin and avoid oil, lotion or powder on the area to be tested, as they interfere with the electrodes.
• Tell the staff about a pacemaker or implanted stimulator, blood-thinning medicines, or any bleeding disorder before the study starts.
• Medicines: do not stop your regular medicines unless the requesting doctor has told you to; mention what you take.

No ionising radiation is used. The pulses are brief and mild, though they can be uncomfortable.
