What is Digital X-Ray of Retrograde Urethrogram (RGU)?

A Digital X-ray of Retrograde Urethrogram (RGU) is an imaging procedure used to examine the urethra, particularly to detect injuries, strictures, or blockages. During the procedure, a contrast dye is injected into the urethra through a catheter, allowing X-ray images to capture the shape and condition of the urethra.

This is typically done in cases of trauma, difficulty urinating, or unexplained symptoms. The procedure is minimally invasive but may cause discomfort or a sensation of fullness.

What to expect & how to prepare

• Bring earlier films: previous X-rays of the same area help with comparison.

A plain X-ray uses a small dose of ionising radiation. Tell the radiographer before the exposure if you are pregnant or think you might be.
