What is Digital X-Ray of Hysterosalpingography?

A Digital X-Ray of Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a specialized imaging procedure used to evaluate the uterus and fallopian tubes in women, typically to investigate fertility issues. During the procedure, a contrast dye is injected into the uterus through the cervix, and X-rays are taken to visualize the shape of the uterus and check for blockages or abnormalities in the fallopian tubes.

What to expect & how to prepare

• Metal: remove jewellery, coins, belts and clothing with zips or hooks over the area, or change into a gown as advised.
• Positioning: you may be asked to stand, sit or lie in a specific position — for weight-bearing views you will stand on the affected limb.
• Bring earlier films: previous X-rays of the same area help with comparison.

A plain X-ray uses a small dose of ionising radiation. Tell the radiographer before the exposure if you are pregnant or think you might be.
